Managing Side effects: Dietary tips for kids on antibiotics

Antibiotics are given for bacterial infection and they tend to kill both bad and good bacterias in the gut. As a result of this some side effects like abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea have been observed in kids. Sometimes even some allergic reactions like rashes can be seen. So a proper understanding is required in finishing the course of antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor, and in providing a healthy diet to restore the gut health.

Foods to be included in the diet:

  1. Probiotic foods - Fermented foods that have live beneficial bacteria supports building a healthy gut. Plain Yoghurts, Butter milk and porridge made of fermented millets or rice.
  2. Bland, easy digestible and protein rich foods to help maintain energy levels.
  3. Hydration is important when the child undergoes diarrhoea. So water and home made fruit juices without excessive sugars are recommended.
  4. Prebiotic foods that helps to nurture the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Bananas, apples, oats, beans and lentils can be included in their diet. These fiber rich foods are advised to intake after the course of antibiotics as they may slow down the absorption of some medications.

These are advised by my kids pediatrician when they had to be on antibiotics during fever in recent times. So am sharing this information which helped me a lot in restoring their gut health.

This information is very beneficial for every parent or soon to be parent. As they should have proper knowledge about a child’s nutrition. Recently, there was a case in the US that parents of an infant put their child on an “alkaline” diet suggested by a health expert where they cutted of all the poultry and dairy products. Which really deprived the child of protein, calcium and other vital nutrients for normal growth. Unfortunately, the child is no more due to some deficiencies and the accused are behind bars. So, right knowledge is very essential
