Male contraceptives have been limited to condoms and vasectomy. With a new research aiming to deliver non- hormonal oral contraceptive, Phase 1 trial has proved to be successful in humans and is heading on to the further steps.
What is YCT-529?
It is a non- hormonal contraceptive that reversibly stops sperm production.
How does it work?
It blocks Vitamin A, which acts as a metabolite from binding to its receptor in the testes, preventing a chain of gene expression changes that are required to start the sperm making process.
Why is it looked forward to?
Since it is non-hormonal, very slim chances of side effects such as changes to sexual functions or mood are expected. Moreover, according to a survey conducted, a large number of males are open to trying an oral reversible contraceptive.
What do you think of YCT-529 and what would the future of male contraceptives look like?

Very informative. We should think about the promotion of male contraceptives. In rural area men still think it’s taboo to use contraceptive methods. We surely need some awareness and promotion for that as well.

Good information. This could change the burden on women, who often bear the responsibility for both fertility and infertility. This could truly turn the tables.
This is very interesting . If the test results comes out as safe then this could definitely change the scene of contraception . It also gives a push towards the “shared responsibility” among male and female both .
That sounds promising, more awareness about this should be shared to the public.

Yes, we need to spread better awareness and try to remove taboo around this.
Indeed! Male contraceptives should be promoted and encouraged as much as female contraceptives. This could change the perspective that women are the ones responsible for fertility or pregnancy.

looks promising. A non-hormonal option sounds better in terms of side effects.

I think the future of male birth control looks positive. Let’s hope they pass the trials, given that female contraceptives have been on the market for decades despite having 30–40% side-effect rates. Males don’t face the physical risks, yet it is the reason regulators are extremely hesitant to approve any male method that has even minor side effects

Hopefully this brings in a lot of males to step- in to try contraception, forcing pharma companies to come up with more such innovations.
