Key OECD Guidelines for Testing Chemicals

OECD Guidelines for Toxicity Testing

TG: Testing Guidelines

OECD(Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) is a global hub for public-policy data and best practices, collaborating with over 100 countries to build stronger, fairer, and cleaner societies and shape better policies for better lives.

The OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals are based on global standards for safety. Essential protocols include Acute Oral Toxicity methods like Fixed Dose (TG 420) & Up-&-Down (TG 425). Long-term safety is evaluated via Repeated Dose(TG 407, 408), Chronic Toxicity (TG 452), & Carcinogenicity (TG 451) studies in rodents.

The OECD Testing Guidelines form the backbone of global chemical and drug safety evaluation, ensuring that data generated across countries is standardized, reliable, and ethically aligned. Their acute toxicity tests—such as TG 420 (Fixed Dose Method) and TG 425 (Up-and-Down Procedure)—have significantly reduced animal use while maintaining high scientific validity. Longer-term studies like TG 407 (28-day), TG 408 (90-day), TG 452 (chronic toxicity), and TG 451 (carcinogenicity) allow regulators to understand cumulative and lifetime risks of chemicals. These harmonized methods ensure that results from India, Europe, or the US are globally comparable, supporting safer pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food additives, and environmental chemicals.
