Yes. In this example, if the researchers hadn’t listened to trial participants and ignore that erection has been improve using sildenafil then we never know another use of sildenafil. Minoxidil is another example. Sometimes, unexpected side effects can lead to major scientific breakthroughs.

Sildenafil completely changed how pharma views secondary endpoint observations during Phase I/II clinical trials. What started as an unexpected side-effect profile transformed into a multi-billion dollar market and opened the door for systematic drug repurposing platforms. It proves that a molecule’s therapeutic value isn’t always where you initially look for it.

Thanks for reminding me. I came to know about this during my B. Pharm days. Just like sildenafil, semaglutide was created to help manage type 2 diabetes; it then became popular for appetite suppression and rapid weight loss.

Yes, this was the incidence where repurposing of drug was initiated. Later, many research was carried out to prove other clinical benefits.
