Is the Syllabus Outdated?

Have you ever felt the dental syllabus doesn’t match today’s clinical reality?

We still focus on amalgam restorations, while composite fillings and cosmetic procedures like veneers are more in demand.
Even in endo, there’s more emphasis on hand filing than rotary techniques, which are the norm in modern practice.
And we spend hours learning procedures like hand scaling, wire bending, and more that we rarely perform during internships.
It’s time to rethink what we teach—and how we prepare future dentists for real-world dentistry.
May we need not avoid them completely but we can focus on the real world dentistry as well.

What part of your syllabus felt outdated to you?
Is it just dentistry, or do you think other healthcare fields are stuck in the past too?

Yes it’s true. In pedo, SS crowns are given more priority and no emphasis on zirconia crowns and myofunctional appliances. The syllabus needs to be updated according to the practice methods outside.

Absolutely, many parts of the dental syllabus feel outdated. Education across healthcare needs to evolve faster to match real-world practice and modern technology.
