Is the Decline in Childhood Outdoor Play Becoming a Public Health Concern?

Playing outside, which forms the core of childhood, is gradually being eliminated- screens, school pressures and safety are taking its place. This change is alounding great health concerns in the people particularly in the aspect of physical, psychological and social growth in children.

The loss of outdoor play is a contributor to the increased obesity levels among children, the decline in the cardiovascular fitness, worse bone strength, and lack of vitamin D. In addition to the physical consequences, the lack of playtime has consequences in the areas of emotional regulation, attention span, creativity, and social skills.

Too much screen-time and organized indoor activities deny children physical activity and unplanned play which would be vital to their healthy development. What seems a change of lifestyle is silently transforming the years of long-term health.

The solution to revamping outdoor play would be parental awareness, safer community areas, moderate screen time, and physical activity priority policies in schools and communities.

Do you feel that the children of the modern age are lacking in the necessary health benefits due to spending less time in the open sphere?

Yes modern day children are missing out on physical outdoor activities and I feel this situation is much more worse for young girls than boys. Even if enthusiastic girls choose to be more athletic and physically active they still find many difficulties as not all localities have parks, houses are small with less open spaces and there are conveyance issues.

Yes, it is. Children these days lack physical activity and are inclined towards screen which harms their health and mind.

Children spending less time outdoors is also one of the causes of a weakened immune system. Playing in dirt increases microbial exposure, which helps train immune cells to recognize and fight pathogens, thereby strengthening immunity.
