Is choosing a specialty based on lifestyle a wrong decision?

Choosing a specialty based on the lifestyle is not wrong as in this context, lifestyle means the working hours, stress and time for the personal life. As everyone works hard to get all the best for themselves and their families, they look into a job which causes minimal strain on their family and their social lives.

For example, after completing my Bachelor of Dental Surgery, I realized that different specialties have different lifestyles. Some involve long and stressful procedures, while others have more fixed timings and less pressure. So, choosing a field based on lifestyle helps in maintaining balance and avoiding burnout/ overload.

It is not proper to choose a medical specialty because it is easy or convenient. In addition to convenience, the medical specialty must also appeal to the individual. If it does not, the individual may soon become bored with their job.

Therefore, the best decision for everyone is to find a compromise between personal interest and lifestyle. A good job must be both motivating and favorable to health.

Way forward, selecting a specialty based on the “lifestyle” alone is certainly not unjustifiable.
