Inflammaging refers to a slow, ongoing inflammation inside the body that can develop as we get older. It doesn’t happen because we are sick or injured. Instead, it builds up gradually over many years due to factors such as:
- Immune system becoming less efficient.
- Accumulation of damaged cells.
- Lack of physical activity.
- Poor sleep.
- Long-term stress.
- Excess body fat.
- Unhealthy diet and smoking.
Many people don’t notice any symptoms until health problems begin to appear and that's why it is called as silent inflammation. It doesn’t directly cause the disease, but increases the risk of several long-term health conditions.
Inflammaging may be silent, but we should not ignore the symptoms. Healthy lifestyle choices can not stop the ageing process, but they can help you stay stronger and independent for a longer time.
Do you think our daily habits have a bigger impact on ageing than we realise?
