India’s TB fight gets a boost

India has introduced two new Made-in-India TB diagnostic tests, developed by Huwel Lifesciences and validated by the ICMR, to make tuberculosis detection faster and cheaper.

  • Quantiplus MTB FAST kit: An open-system RT-PCR test that works on regular lab machines, processes up to 96 samples at once, and cuts testing costs by around 20%.
  • UniAMP MTB Test Card: Uses tongue swabs instead of sputum, enabling quick, non-invasive testing — even at people’s doorsteps.

These innovations aim to speed up diagnosis, improve access in remote areas, and strengthen India’s push to eliminate TB while reducing dependence on imported technology.

Do you think simple, home-based tests like these could change how we fight infectious diseases?
