Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) refer to a wide range of musculoskeletal and functional conditions involving TMJs, masticatory muscles, and the surrounding tissues. It is one of the most common yet underdiagnosed causes of pain in the orofacial region in dental practice.
Common Symptoms:
-Pain or tenderness in the jaw
-Clicking, popping, or grating sound on movement of the jaw
-Limited mouth opening
-Facial pain, headaches, and ear pain
-Difficulty in chewing or locking of the jaw
May result from:
- Parafunctional habits (bruxism, nail biting)
- Stress and anxiety (muscle tension)
- Trauma, occlusal discrepancies, or degenerative joint diseases like arthritis
Diagnosis includes:
-Clinical examination (palpation, auscultation, range of motion)
-History-taking (onset, triggers, systemic conditions)
-Imaging (OPG, CBCT, MRI for soft tissue and joint disc evaluation)
Treatment mostly involves conservative methods:
-Lifestyle changes and jaw exercises
-Analgesics and muscle relaxants
-Occlusal splints (night guards)
-Stress management counselling
-Surgery is rarely needed & usually in unresponsive cases.
