Health Camps: Small Steps, Big Impact

I still remember attending my first school health camp. Doctors checked our eyes, measured height & weight, and guided us on healthy eating. At that age, it felt like a fun event — but looking back, it was a powerful preventive step.

Early detection of vision problems, anemia, malnutrition, or even mental health concerns can change a child’s future.

These camps are not just about check-ups; they are about building awareness, confidence, and healthier communities.

Do you think every school and college should have annual health camps as a compulsory activity?

Annual health camps can really change things. Not only it will help in early detection, but students will also learn to prioritize their health.

I have helped organize health camps in schools and villages as well, and the impact is huge! For kids it’s early detection, for elders it’s regular monitoring. Annual camps in schools and colleges can indeed build a stronger culture of prevention.

School health camps truly go beyond check-ups, they shape healthier habits early on and give children a stronger foundation for life. Prevention really is the best care.

I remember that during school days, we used to have health check-ups twice a year. They would measure our height and weight, and it felt quite chaotic at times. We were even given vitamins and iron supplements. Later, in college, as I was studying biomedical Engineering, our department organized a medical camp once a year. During this camp, we measured weight, height, BMI, blood sugar, blood pressure, conducted ear tests, checked SpO2, and performed many other tests using our equipment. We provided the results to participants a day or two later. Staff, students, drivers, and employees all showed interest in the camp, and it was a really positive experience. I often reminisce about those days and find myself missing them.

Yes, I feel annual health camps should be compulsory in schools and colleges because they help in early detection of health problems among students and also spread awareness about healthy habits. Many children do not get regular medical check-ups at home, so such camps become very useful for them. They also give students confidence to discuss their health openly and learn more about preventive care. Overall, these camps play an important role in building healthier communities and shaping a better future for young people.
