Golden Rice: Good or Bad?

Golden Rice is a genetically modified crop enriched with beta carotene aimed at addressing the vitamin A deficiency, particularly in developing countries. Lately, golden rice is awaiting commercial production, and the debate over its contribution in withstanding nutritional deficiencies continues.

Let me know your take on this concept.

If anyone knows we learnt this in NCERT for the NEET UG. Golden rice is a GM engineered to produce B carotene.

Lately, there has been friction between genetically engineered crops and original crops. Excessive modifications of crops has led to the subsequent diminishing of original crops. About Golden rice: I guess its pilot-scale production is awaited.

It holds promise in fighting vitamin A deficiency but ethical, ecological and acceptance issues still cloud its full scale implementation.

Golden Rice offers a promising solution to combat vitamin A deficiency, especially in developing countries. While concerns remain, its potential to improve public health and prevent blindness makes it worth considering.

Golden Rice is a genetically modified crop enriched with beta-carotene to combat vitamin A deficiency. It has potential to prevent blindness and death in developing countries. Studies show Golden Rice is an effective source of vitamin A. Despite benefits, adoption is hindered by regulatory challenges and GMO controversies. Further research is needed for widespread adoption.

There are lots of myths about GMOS and one of them is that if you consume GMOS after a certain limit then they can be dangerous to the health .
Also the biggest myth related to GMOS are that using them is ethically wrong especially in India .
But golden rice is the among the greatest innovations and yes they are a great source of vitamin and its use can be beneficial to the society.

I think Golden Rice is a really interesting idea. It was made to help people especially in poorer countries who don’t get enough vitamin A, which can lead to serious health problems (especially in kids). Adding beta-carotene (which the body turns into vitamin A) into rice something so many people eat daily which sounds like a smart way to help.

But I also understand why some people are still unsure because they worry about GMOs, long-term effects or whether it will really reach the people who need it most.
In the end, I believe it has great potential but it needs to be handled carefully with proper education and support for the communities it’s meant to help.

Yes!!! Biotechnology and its application. One of my favorite chapter .

Golden Rice is one of those innovations that sits at the intersection of science, ethics, and public trust.

Golden Rice is a good idea because it can help people, especially children, who don’t get enough vitamin A in their food. It can stop many health problems like weak eyes or even blindness. But some people worry because it is a genetically modified (GM) crop. So, it is important to test it properly and make sure it is safe. If it helps poor people get better nutrition, then it can be very useful.

Good:

  • Addresses vitamin A deficiency, which can cause night blindness and other health issues.
  • Can improve nutrition in developing countries where rice is a staple food.

Bad:

  • Genetic modification raises concerns about long-term effects on human health and the environment.
  • Potential risks to biodiversity and gene flow to non-target crops.

I think it is good as it provide more nutrients than normal rice.
But, if high it will cause other problems.
