Gap between research and its commercialization: Government's Initiative

Research publications in India has risen by 7.6% in year 2024 but the implementation of research outcome to industry still remains low.

Several initiatives by government to bridge the gap between research and its commercial application:

  1. CSIR’s Business development groups(BDGs): Aims to connect CSIR’s research capabilities with industry and academia, They facilitate collaboration between public institutions and private industry and enable adoption of CSIR developed technologies.

  2. BRIC-BIRAC EIR( Entrepreneur-in-Residence)Program: Runs under Department of Biotechnology. Its main aim is to bridge lab to market gap between research institution and industry. This program aims enable biological research to commercialize. It offers funding and stipend for innovations.

  3. Technical Research Centers(TRCs): Under Department of Science and Technology. Aims to improve Technology Readiness Level(TRL) of existing research. Provides legal, technical and commercial and financial guidance. Also acts as intermediary between various stakeholders to streamline the process.

  4. NIDHI(National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations) program: Also works under Department of Science and Technology to create a comprehensive ecosystem for scaling innovation. Works on “start to scale” model to connect innovators with industry as well as investors.

While many breakthrough discoveries are done in India, the most crucial challenge remains of translating them into clinical and commercial reality. Initiatives like these by Government represent India’s commitment to bridge this lab to market gap. It helps innovators to navigate the complex journey which consists of many steps and stakeholders.

Such initiatives give confidence to students perusing research that their discoveries can make it to the real world and not stay confined to laboratories.
