New research links gabapentin, a common anticonvulsant, to a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia.
Adults using gabapentin for chronic low back pain had:
29% higher risk of developing dementia
85% higher risk of MCI within 10 years
(compared to those with similar pain not using the drug)
