Eye twitching: from astrology to anatomy

Myokymia is the medical term for an involuntary eye twitch. Most of the time, it’s your body’s way of saying, ‘slow down’.

Common triggers include:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Lack of sleep
  • Excess caffeine
  • Excessive screen time
  • Eye strain and fatigue

In many cultures, eye twitching is linked to luck, bad news, money, or fate.

Eye twitching in astrology/superstition is viewed as an omen, where the left eye often signals good fortune for women and the right for men, or vice-versa depending on cultural context.

While superstition treats a twitch as a omen from the cosmos, medicine views it as a physical signal to manage stress and get rest

What’s the most common belief about eye twitching where you live?

People here definitely still hold onto the old beliefs about right vs. left eye luck, but educating them on the anatomy is a great way to open up a broader conversation about stress.

What I have heard about eye twitching relates it to good omen in case of right eye twitching and bad omen with left eye. However I have also heard it is associated with Vaata dosh in Ayurveda.

The belief that eye twitching brings good fortune is something l have grown up with. But knowing the scientific side of this is an eye opener as to how many ways our body tells us that it needs rest.

True. Most of the time eye twitching happens because of stress, less sleep, too much screen time or caffeine. Our body really gives small signs when it needs rest. Nicely explained :+1:
