Eye Exams Could Save Your Heart — Here’s How

Your eyes don’t only reflect your soul, they also might just show the condition of your heart. Ophthalmologists are now detecting more retinal alterations that indicate cardiovascular issues years before they cause symptoms.

While undergoing routine eye examinations, physicians can identify warning signs of narrowed arteries, microaneurysms, retinal hemorrhage, or plaque deposits, usually reflecting the presence of underlying hypertension, diabetes, or atherosclerosis.

As one of the few systems in the body whose blood vessels can be seen directly, retinal vessels provide a singular view into the vascular system. Routine eye examinations can hence unexpectedly contribute to early detection and prevention of heart disease.

Doctors encourage patients to view the eye exam as anything but a check of your vision, it’s a window into cardiovascular health, and one that may literally save lives.
