Endometriosis is a common gynecologic condition associated with pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea, and in severe cases, it is associated with tubo-ovarian infertility.

significance :- 30–50% of women with endometriosis have infertility

March is observed as Endometriosis awareness month. So we should be aware of endometriosis esp females.

  • affects an estimated 25 to 50 million women in India

  • chronic debilittating pelvic pain, heavy pain and infertlity.

  • It’s one of the cause of acute intestinal obstruction ; other cause:- hernia, neoplasm and malignancy.

  • one of chronic cause of chronic pelvic pain. others :- Common gynecologic conditions contributing to chronic pain are fibroids, adenomyosis, and

    adnexal pathology.

Diagnosis :- laproscopic examination, good history and tracking of menstrual cycle,While symptoms like severe menstrual pain, infertility, and pelvic pain trigger suspicion, imaging (ultrasound, MRI) helps detect cysts (endometriomas), but surgery is required for confirmation

Common Risk Factors and Concerns

  • Early Menarche: Starting periods at an early age (12 or younger).

  • Short Cycles: Menstrual cycles lasting less than 21 days.

  • Family History: A history of endometriosis in the family.

  • Infertility: A strong link exists between infertility and endometriosis, say National Institutes of Health

Summary :-Female body is very sensitive for small chnages so keep track of menarche ( when menstrual cycle starts), duration and symptoms associated with it,keeep a track and also if married asociate it with OCPs intake.

Endometriosis is often normalized as “just painful periods,” which delays diagnosis and prolongs suffering. Severe menstrual pain should never be dismissed.
