Endometrial Hyperplasia: When the Uterine Lining Becomes Too Thick

Endometrial Hyperplasia is a condition in which the lining of the uterus (endometrium) becomes thicker than normal due to excessive growth of endometrial cells.

Obesity is one the risk factor for developing endometrial hyperplasia. Fat tissue contains high levels of aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens to estrogens. In obese individuals where fat tissue is abundant, which can lead to increase in levels of aromatase enzyme which leads to increased estrogen levels.

When uterine wall is continuously exposed to estrogen without enough progesterone, the cells overgrow, leading endometrial hyperplasia.
