Does Everyone Have a Unique Scent?

In movies, most of you might have seen that if a crime happens, police dogs are brought in to help find the culprit. How do you think that works? It’s because each of us has a different scent. Some experiments also suggest that even twins have different smells.

Body odor also depends on factors like food, gender, intake of medication, etc. One of the major contributers for production of body odor is the bacterial activity on the sebaceous gland, especially the apocrine gland. When a child is born, they pick up many bacteria from the mother and those who touch them, and after a few days, they will get settled in the baby’s skin permanently. The skin flora metabolizes the unsaturated fatty acids secreted by the glands, creating body odor.

The skin flora in men is different from that of women.

  • Men - Corynebacterium jeikeium
  • Women - Staphylococcus haemolyticus

This is such an interesting topic. I wonder if one factor has a more major role or if its an interplay of multiple factors in different degrees. If someone knows more about this please add it in the comments I am curious
