Do You Think Empathy Fades During Medical Training?

As I am now interning in a hospital as a Pharm. D., close contact with medical team is a daily thing now. I have seen that they all start with the goal of helping others—but with long hours, pressure, and burnout, many of them feel emotionally numb by the end of their training.
Have you felt this shift in yourself or seen it in others? Can empathy be re-learned?

As working for long hours we will lose interest in the field. And work only for the sake of duty without interest. Getting the empathy back is a difficult thing in this situation but we can handle it by doing our favourite things to relieve stress in the working hours.

Yes, during my early days of internship, i used to feel very sad and think for hours when i see a patient suffer but after some months, i didn’t feel that much, I got replaced by routine and survival.
Small moments of human connection with patients can reignite that spark of empathy that we lost in the way of turning ourselves perfect with our responsibilities.

Does it affect you in personal life too?

That is the beauty of doctor profession but yet a sad thing, the routine and workload makes everything feel like chore.
