Angioplasty is used to unblock blood vessels, most commonly the coronary arteries of the heart. It involves inserting a small wire with a balloon at the end into a blocked blood vessel. After that inflation of the balloon opens up the blockage of the arteries.
There are two types of Angioplasty balloons and balloons with a stent. A stent (a small mesh tube) is placed to keep the artery open permanently.
It is also called as percutaneous coronary intervention. A must know about PCI in case of myocardial infraction ( specific to STEMI) or heart attack , it should be performed within 90 min of first medical contact. It also considered in stable angina and NSTEMI cases. But it is contraindicated in triple vessel or diffuse vessel are affected , CABG is preffered.
Nicely explained. From a PharmD perspective, post-angioplasty care is just as crucial. Patients are usually started on dual antiplatelet therapy (like aspirin + clopidogrel/ticagrelor) to prevent stent thrombosis, along with statins and lifestyle modifications. Monitoring adherence and counseling on side effects make a big difference in long-term outcomes.
