Differentiate between Sustained Release (SR) and Controlled Release (CR) tablets?

  1. Sustained Release (SR):
These tablets are designed to release the medicine slowly over a longer period. This helps reduce the frequency of medication administration throughout the day. However, the drug level in the blood may still rise and fall during that time, so it is not always perfectly steady.
Example: Diclofenac SR tablet – gives pain relief for about 12 hours.
  2. Controlled Release (CR):
These tablets are more advanced. They are made in such a way that the medicine comes out at a fixed, controlled speed, keeping the amount of drug in the blood almost steady and constant for many hours. This ensures better treatment and fewer side effects.
Example: Nifedipine CR (Procardia XL) – used for high blood pressure, works evenly for 24 hours.

good information

Excellent breakdown. It’s easy to understand the difference between SR for longer action and CR for steady blood levels.

Yes it’s really working in this way .Sustained release - drug release over a sustained period but not at a constant rate . controlled release maintain the drug release over a sustained period at a constant rate.NICARDIA SR -nifedipine sr were used in lot of places inspite of Nifedipine plain in order to maintain BP for a longer duration of time and also will reduce the BP slowly. (Nifidipine plain may cause sudden fall in BP might lead to other complications too)
