CSIR is not an institution, where one can join. There are CSIR associated research labs all over the country and many universities accept CSIR scores to appoint research fellows or Ph.D. candidates. People write CSIR exam after post-graduation degree to join as a junir/senior research fellow or to register as a Ph.D. candidate in an university or a research lab in the country. The exam happens twice a year and once you clear it, with that score you can apply to various institutions and research labs. As CSIR qualification brings high credibility, many universities/labs will call you for a written test or interview and after you clear them you get appointed as a research fellow or join Ph.D. Likewise, ICMR and DBT conduct national-level exams too for the same, but CSIR is the prestigious one.

To join CSIR as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF), candidates must have an MSc or equivalent degree in Science or Technology with at least 55% marks, while SC/ST/PwD candidates require 50%. The maximum age limit is 28 years, with relaxation for reserved categories. Additionally, qualifying the CSIR-UGC NET JRF examination is mandatory to secure the fellowship.
