Common Clinical Research Knowledge and Technical Skill Sets Required for Beginners

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to understand the core clinical research knowledge, technical skills, and areas of expertise that are commonly expected for individuals entering the clinical research field.

Specifically

1)Fundamental clinical research concepts every beginner should know

  1. Any tools, software, or documentation skills frequently used

I would be grateful for guidance from professionals or experienced members on what skills to prioritize while preparing for clinical research roles.

Thank you in advance.

Great question. For beginners entering clinical research, it’s important to first understand core concepts such as clinical trial phases, study designs, informed consent, ethics and GCP guidelines, basic biostatistics, and regulatory requirements.

In terms of skills, familiarity with documentation like case report forms (CRFs), source documents, protocols, and SOPs is essential. Commonly used tools include EDC systems, Microsoft Excel, basic statistical software (such as SPSS or R at a beginner level), and reference managers like EndNote or Zotero.
