Circadian Rhythm in Danger- a Threat to Life

Circadian rhythm also called as sleep wake cycle or day night cycle is controlled by biological clocks located in organs and glands and is mastered by suprachiasmaticnucleus. It works according to nature and environment.

Circadian rhythm helps in regulating sleep wake cycle, body temperature, immune system, hormones, metabolism, cognitive function, and the body’s reaction to stress.

Why is the need to talk about it?
Circadian rhythm is getting disrupted by our changed lifestyles like

  • eating breakfast, lunch and dinner timing has changed

  • Sleeping time has changed due to working in shifts

  • Taking tea or coffee in day or night anytime

  • Use of mobile phones, laptops at night

  • Staying in closed rooms whole day

  • Night life

  • Waking up late in morning

This Circadian Rhythm Disruption is bringing up so many diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, heart attacks, thyroid disorder, pcod, sleep disorders, cancer and more in younger age group too.

Maintaining a time table for everything according to the circadian rhythm in our lives will help to live longer and disease free.

How can we bring changes in our life according to circadian rhythm in this changing world with cities that never sleep?

Having a disciplined routine and sticking to it can actually solve most of our problems. Since childhood, we have been taught to get up early and sleep early, eat well and stay away from television sets and mobile phones. It’s just that we need to keep up with these good habits for a lifetime.

To be honest it’s going to be a war to manage the circadium rhythm because the lifestyle of people have changed so much and even if they want to, it’s going to be more stressfull.

I think the best thing we can do is to set few rules for ourselves like no coffee after 4 pm, 10 to 15 min of sunlight everyday in the morning and no screens 1 hr before bed.
