Child kidnapping in India

There are many reported cases showing that child kidnapping happens frequently in India. Children are often exploited and forced into begging. In many incidents, kidnappers operate in groups, with three or four women involved, while some men deal with the police and other government authorities.

India faces a staggering child kidnapping crisis of unprecedented proportions. The most recent data reveals a problem so deeply entrenched in Indian society that it touches nearly every region and every social stratum. In 2023 alone, 82,106 children were kidnapped or abducted across the country. A figure so large it defies immediate comprehension, yet remains a barely visible tragedy in national discourse.

More troubling still, over 47,000 children remain missing across the nation, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, with more than 51,100 unrecovered victims of kidnapping and abduction accumulated over previous years.

The picture darkens further when examining unrecovered victims. Among the 51,100 minors listed as unrecovered, 40,219 (78.7%) are girls. This means that girls not only comprise a larger proportion of kidnapped children but are also less likely to be recovered.

The vulnerability of girls extends across all states. In Delhi, 98,360 girls were reported missing in the past decade compared to 86,368 boys; yet only 70,696 girls have been traced, leaving 27,664 unaccounted for. This represents a recovery gap: while some girls are traced, a larger absolute number remain missing compared to boys.

These numbers show the seriousness of situation, more than 40,000 minor girls who were never returned home. This is not work of few people, this is deep rooted problem and definitely to counter this problem some special efforts are needed in order to save childhood.

I am sure that the data recorded here is only the reported one. Because the actual incidents are far more in number. Especially in villages where casteism and social evils are a part of people’s lives.

Child trafficking is still very prominent in the country. Even more scary is the part that even police sometimes is involved in this. We should teach our children the basic of communication with others and not to fall for their traps or teaching them self defence can also make a difference. No child deserves a world without love and affection of their parents.

The growing number of cases is alarming. This may seem like a crisis with a deeper and darker future. The lack of awareness should be addressed. Proper investigations and government policies should be implemented to prevent further cases.

The number might be even higher, as many cases in rural areas often go unreported. Strong community awareness, better reporting systems, faster police action, and strict enforcement of child protection laws are urgently needed to prevent such crimes and ensure safe recovery.

These are very disturbing statistics and an alarming situation for the government to take some serious steps in solving this deep rooted problem.

What steps should we take to stop such acts?
