Career advice: How to move ahead when you don't know the next step

When we are in school and pass the exams, the next step is certainly moving to the next standard by default. And, when it comes to choosing a stream, that too maybe is easy based on subjects we like or what we want to become—a doctor, engineer, or CA. Likewise, we end up making it through graduation, and as the graduation ends, that’s when the real confusion hits.

So, here’s how to navigate through this confusing phase of life.

  1. Don’t see your entire life at once

Maybe your long-term goal is starting your own business or opening a hospital, but if this isn’t possible at this very moment, just do what you can do during that phase of your life to move forward.

Just make use of skills, knowledge, or opportunities that you have with you in the present. Maybe you need to start small to make it big in the future.

  1. Don’t chase money

You may end up choosing the wrong path or finding cheaper ways of making money if you just chase money. Government jobs or work-from-home and earn-easy options do look glamorous, but you may end up living a life that makes you unhappy and stressed daily. Money is a tool, not an end goal; at the end, all you want is a lived life.

  1. Learn and grow

Focus on gaining knowledge and building skills. The opportunities will follow you, opening new doors for you. Just don’t stay stuck till you find the best and ideal job for you. Each opportunity that comes your way teaches you and makes you a better person.

Remember, a flowing water stream creates its path on its own eventually, and stagnant water just accumulates clay and mud. So, just keep flowing and keep growing. :sunflower:

This post depicts the most need of the hour wonderful advice. I also feel that nowadays most students are choosing a career which they didn’t intend to but just because of people’s sayings that it has more scope and also by looking up to someone who is earning well in that career. Every individual has a different personality so students should avoid falling into these traps and choose a career in which they are actually interested in. Also, one should always be open to change careers at any point in their life if they wish to.

When all your plans of life does not work and every part of it starts to shatter, during such times one should take a step back and start looking at the broader picture of life . We often make a certain exam or a certain job ,our entire life but we should understand that it is not your whole life . It is just a part of it.
Take a step back , look how far you have come and breathe . Make another plan and start working . I just want to highlight that highs and lows are part of life and one should not stop living because of them . You will make it when time is right for you .

Very well said. As a science background student, I also faced a lot of confusion about my Carrer and what to do after my graduation. Taking a moment to reflect helped me understand what I actually need, and now I’m working on what I truly like. In my view, it’s important to choose what you enjoy, as you need to be satisfied, not others.

Can relate. We’re so used to predefined milestones that uncertainty feels like failure. Took me a while to realise progress isn’t always linear; sometimes just staying in motion is enough. Learning to move without a fixed roadmap is a skill in itself.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I really liked the analogy of flowing water. We don’t need to have our entire career figured out from day one. Staying curious, learning continuously, and making the most of each opportunity often leads us to the right path.
