When someone got diagnosed as having kidney stones one common advice they got from relatives and social members that “no need to take medicine just drink more water your stone will flushed out”, but seriously this is true let’s find out.
Stones can be present in Kidney, Ureters, Urinary bladder and even in urethra so in all cases drinking water doesn’t work. If the stone size is large and it obstructed in some part of urinary tract no amount of water can flushed it out and rare cases stone damages that wall of urinary tract later causing severe symptoms.
Location, size and type of stone matters if small stone present in urinary bladder and urethra it can be easily flushed out but large size stone if stuck in kidney or in ureter then it may leads to severe conditions like hydronephrosis.
Water alone cannot give result so doctors advising diuretics (a medication that helps kidney functions and increases the excretion of water in the form of urine), Many doctors see bad prognosis of the disease so they advice surgeries.
so one should not be reliable and thinking that drinking more and more water can easily helps them to get rid off stones and should take proper treatment and follow every advice of doctor.
It was a great post. My mother has a kidney stone that is quite huge and causes pain every now and then we are scared of surgery because of the complications, but taking advice from a good nephrologist is the solution to this, I guess. Thank you for providing good information.
Good post! Assumptions and myths certainly move you far from your doctor. Stones which are bigger in size and dimension can block you ureter and cause extreme pain. These can’t flush out by drinking more water. Consultation and proper medication can help.
