How can detecting a disease early ever be harmful sometimes?

The answer lies in two concepts every healthcare professional should know.

Lead-time bias makes it look like people live longer simply because the disease was diagnosed earlier, not because treatment actually extended life.

Length bias happens because screening is more likely to detect slow-growing, less aggressive diseases than fast-growing ones, making the screening test appear more successful than it really is.

This doesn’t mean screening is bad.

It reminds us that screening programmes should be interpreted carefully and backed by strong evidence.

Sometimes, finding disease earlier isn’t the same as helping people live longer.

Generally, early detection helps identify the disease in time. It makes it easy to start the treatment. Moreover, it improves prognosis and reduces complications and mortality.

Sometimes, early diagnosis may be dangerous and harmful. Overdiagnosis may produce false-positive results, leading to unnecessary anxiety and unwanted medication, which can cause life-threatening conditions.

I think screening can cause overdiagnosis, false positives, unnecessary anxiety, and invasive follow-up procedures
