Dark lips can happen for so many reasons dehydration, sun, or even genetics. I just try to keep my lips moisturized, drink enough water, and use a lip balm with SPF. As for lipsticks, wearing them too often without proper removal can definitely dull your natural color over time.

Yes, some brands of lipsticks can contribute towards lip darkening, especially the ones with heavy metals such as lead or few allergens like BHA and parabens. Long-term use of these lipsticks without suitable lip care can result in pigmentation and expired products can cause more damage because the chemicals in them are already degraded. That’s why it is advisable to use lead-free and dermatologically tested lipsticks and it’s a healthy practice to exfoliate it weekly once with a mild scrub. Moreover, utilization of dark shade lipsticks (like red, maroon, bright pink, dark brown) should be minimized because they have more strong chemical dyes and it is better to go with lighter shades like soft pink, peach or other neutral ones.

Use lip balms with spf
Use lipsticks that have ghee as a product in it.
Ghee is a natural protector against sunburns (said in old age textbooks aka ayurveda)

Using products made by chemicals or products that are not made naturally, it darkens the lips
