For centuries, mantra chanting has been a part of spiritual and meditative traditions. But could it also have measurable effects on the brain?
Modern neuroscience is beginning to explore this question. In a pilot functional MRI (fMRI) study conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), healthy volunteers chanted “OM” while their brain activity was monitored. Interestingly, researchers observed decreased activity in several limbic brain regions, including the amygdala, hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex, and thalamus, areas involved in emotional processing and stress responses.
The researchers proposed that the vibration produced during audible “OM” chanting might stimulate branches of the vagus nerve, producing brain activity patterns resembling those seen with vagus nerve stimulation, an established treatment for certain neurological and psychiatric conditions. However, they emphasized that this was a small pilot study and that larger clinical trials are needed before drawing conclusions about therapeutic benefits.
Subsequent research has continued to investigate these findings. Some studies suggest that regular OM chanting may reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, and influence brain networks involved in attention and stress, although the overall evidence remains preliminary and varies in quality.
Importantly, chanting is not a substitute for evidence-based medical treatment. Instead, it represents a promising area of integrative medicine, where ancient practices are being examined using modern scientific methods.
