Calm Comes in a Syringe

The world’s first Anit-anxiety vaccine is being developed. With a compound called PA-915 is getting attention.

So, what is PA-915?

PA-915 is an experimental compound that targets the brain’s stress system. It works through the PAC1 receptor, a key regulator of the HPA axis and cortisol response.

How it works?

In conditions of chronic stress, the brain remains in a prolonged stress state, with continuously elevated cortisol levels. This can contribute to anxiety and mood disorders.

PA-915 appears to:

  • Block the PAC1 receptor
  • Reduce excessive stress signaling
  • Help stabilize the body’s stress response

What do current studies show

So far, data comes from animal studies. Researchers have observed reduced anxiety like behavior and antidepressant-like effects after a single dose. The effects lasted for several weeks make it particularly interesting compared to many current treatments.

Important to understand- this is not a vaccine and not approved for treatment.
There are no human trials yet. Its safety profile is unknown, and long terms effects are still unclear.

So, this is still early-stage research.

When I came across this post, i was amazed to see the level of scientific development we have reached. :man_scientist: :test_tube: But at the same time, it saddened me thinking how Mental health disorders has affected millions across the globe.:sad_but_relieved_face:

So the vaccine is definitely going to help patients where counselling, therapy and medications have failed to work efficiently.:+1: But the need to develop this “ANTI ANXIETY” vaccine makes me think  how society as a whole can be of help to reduce the number of cases of mental health disorders.

May be after COVID, anxiety and depression is the pandemic taking over the globe.:globe_showing_europe_africa: :busts_in_silhouette:

It’s really an achievement for medical science if this gets past human trials and is out there. However what i am concerned about is people will stop being accountable for mental health and be dependent on a syringe. Anxiety and other mental disorders are deep rooted. Wouldn’t it be better to heal the root cause rather than depending on a drug.

Although research on this compound is still in its nascent stage, if proved successful in human trials, it could open new doors in the treatment of anxiety disorders , especially in patients who struggle to take their medications consistently.

The process is yet to be seen and concluded.

I think there can never be an anti-anxiety vaccine because anxiety is a very multifactorial disorder; it is not caused by bacteria or food poisoning.

When there is no predefined, sure-shot aetiology, how can there be a cure?
