Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly moved, calmed, or even got energized just by standing in front of a painting or gazing at a photograph/picture?
As Science has been confirming what many have intuitively felt and that is, “the act of viewing art does heal”.
– A 2021 scoping review published in the journal “BMJ Open” analyzed 14 peer-reviewed studies, examining the effects of viewing “visual art” on stress. It found consistent evidence of reduced stress, with several studies showing measurable reductions in systolic blood pressure, indicating a real shift in autonomic nervous system activity during and after art exposure.
– A randomized crossover trial published in the journal “Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts” (2020) observed that participants who viewed figurative art in a museum showed greater reductions in blood pressure and tension than those who viewed modern or abstract work, pointing towards content-specific physiological effects within the body.
– Most recently, a 2024 review article published in the journal “Frontiers in Psychology” emphasized that passive art viewing activates the medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and amygdala regions of the brain and these are the regions that modulate emotional regulation, cognitive clarity, and stress recovery mostly. Hence, these activations correlate with decreased cortisol levels and improvement in mood, even after brief viewing sessions.
Together, all these studies suggest a profound truth and that is, your brain recognizes beauty as nourishment. Besides, it was also found that, visual art does not need to be interpreted/understood to be therapeutic and it simply needs to be seen.
Have you ever paused in front of a piece of art and felt your body becoming calmer, clearer, or more present?
If viewing art can measurably lower stress and activate healing brain networks, should we consider access to beauty as essential to our health just like access to light, air, or movement?
Art always make me take a pause and feel. If simply seeing art can calm the nervous system and activate healing, then maybe beauty isn’t a luxury, it’s a form of mental nourishment.
Honestly, I had no idea about this before. It’s my first time learning that just looking at art can have such a calming and healing effect on the brain. It’s really interesting to know that something as simple as viewing a painting or a picture could actually lower stress or help us feel more present.
I definitely feel this. I paint a little myself, and it always calms my mind, it is like therapy. And when I see others artworks, I get so excited and amazed by their talent. Sometimes I just stand there, stunned, taking it all in for so long.
I’m not sure I’ve felt a calm from observing art, but I certainly have felt calm and at peace while making art. I think observing art and creating your own through personal inspirations can be truly healing implementations in medical institutions.
Yes, I’ve felt it that quiet shift inside when I just sit or stand still, especially with nature. One of the simplest moments is when I get a window seat in a bus. I don’t listen to the noise or even think about where I’m going I just zone out, watch the world blur past, and for a few peaceful minutes, I travel into another world.
And there’s one more thing a photo from my childhood. It’s such a simple picture, but every time I see my little self, that cute, innocent version of me, I feel a deep, grounding peace. I smile without even realizing it. No explanations needed. It just makes me feel… safe.
So yes I believe art does heal. Whether it’s nature, a memory, a photograph, or a painting, the beauty we take in quietly rebalances something within us. If it can soothe our nervous system, calm our mind, and reconnect us with joy, then maybe beauty isn’t just “nice to have” maybe it’s something we need.
This is actually a new information for me .If a Simple art can be used as to calm down the stress and make us healthy so , it’s great. Thanks for Sharing this Valuable information
@caryn lovely to hear that. Yes, making art makes the PFC region of our brain more functional and it reduces any over-activity in the amygdala of the brain, that causes stress.
Art doesn’t just please eyes it touches brain too.when we see something beautiful our releases dopamine .it is like natural boost making us feel happy .it shows beauty is not just emotional its biological.
Art become form of healing not just expression.its proof that creativity can truly nourish the mind and soul.
