I love listening to music and while scrolling and discovering different genres of music, I came across Binaural Beats. And after listening to it, I felt calm. So, I looked more into it, and I found that these are special audio frequencies designed to influence brain activities and help in relaxing, focusing or sleeping.
Working of Binaural Beats:
It works by producing two slightly different frequencies. Each ear hears a different frequency through headphones. The brain perceives a third beat which is created from the difference between the original two beats. Let’s break this with an example for easy understanding.
Your left ear hears 200 Hz of frequency while your right ear hears 210 Hz, your brain is going to interpret a 10 Hz ( 200 - 210) beat. This beat is called the Binaural Beat and is used to show its effect on the brain according to the frequency that is created. This occurs through the process called Brainwave Entrainment, meaning your brain starts syncing with the frequency.
Effects of Binaural Beats on the Human Brain using different frequencies:
Delta Wave: (0.5 - 4 Hz)
Many people struggle with sleeping. This can be used as an alternative to taking medicine for better sleep. Soft frequencies combined with calming sounds can help slow down the thoughts and prepare the mind for rest.
Theta Wave: (4 - 8 Hz)
Everyone must have felt anxious about something and listening to this frequency has proved relaxing the mind. This doesn’t mean it can fix the anxiety. Research is still ongoing regarding this.
Alpha Wave: (8 - 13 Hz)
For a longer focus, Binaural Beats of these frequencies can be heard. It is helpful for the students to increase focus and concentration, and also if anyone has to work for a short duration.
Beta Wave: (13 - 30 Hz)
These show similar effects to the Alpha Wave, just that it is used for more focused work for a longer time duration. It is also associated with concentration, activating logical thinking and alertness.
Gamma Wave: (30 - 100 Hz)
These frequencies help in deep meditation and in increasing cognitive abilities. These waves are linked with memory formation, understanding insights of any information, deep mental clarity and fast information integration.
The brain constantly responds to its surroundings, be it light, sound, silence, movement or emotions. And a small change in sound can change the way the mind feels or perceives.
Have you ever noticed how certain sounds instantly calm your mind?
