Antimicrobial Resistance: Protecting the Medicines That Protect Us

For decades, antibiotics have made once-deadly infections treatable and have enabled life-saving procedures such as surgeries, cancer chemotherapy, and organ transplantation. Today, however, the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens these achievements. When bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to withstand the drugs designed to eliminate them, infections become harder and sometimes impossible to treat.

The drivers of AMR are complex: unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, self-medication, incomplete treatment courses, and the widespread use of antimicrobials in agriculture all contribute to the problem. The consequences are already visible in hospitals and communities worldwide, where resistant infections lead to prolonged illness, higher healthcare costs, and increased mortality.

Combating AMR requires a collective effort. Healthcare professionals must practice responsible prescribing, policymakers should strengthen surveillance and stewardship programs, researchers need support to develop new therapies, and each of us can help by using antibiotics only when truly necessary and by following preventive measures such as vaccination, hand hygiene, and infection control practices.

The medicines we rely on today are a shared resource. The choices we make now will determine whether future generations inherit a world where common infections remain curable.
