Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are unwanted and unintended responses to medications that can range anywhere from mild and annoying to serious and life-threatening. Think of them as the body’s unexpected response to a medicine that’s supposed to help you—sometimes the cure brings its own set of problems. While most drugs are beneficial when used correctly, virtually no medication comes without some risk, and understanding these risks is important for anyone taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

The key thing to understand is that adverse drug reactions are different from simply taking too much of a medicine or misusing it. An ADR is specifically an unwanted response that happens even when someone’s taking the medication exactly as prescribed. It can show up as anything from a minor rash or mild nausea to something much more serious like organ damage or anaphylaxis.

Yes, such reactions even when the drug dosage is taken as prescribed. For example:

  • Hair loss (Alopecia) due to some chemotherapy drugs
  • Liver damage (Hepatotoxicity) due to high dosage of paracetamol (acetaminophen) or certain statins/troglitazone
  • Anaphylaxis (life-threatening allergic reactions- hives, swelling of tongue or throat etc.) related to penicillin and NSAIDs.

And many such other cases prevail where ADR may become quite severe.

It is extremely important to know what kind of ADR might occur after taking a drug.

1.) Normal ADR

The reaction in which there’s no need for any medical checkup or emergency. For example:- Nausea, light fever, etc

2.) Mild ADR

The reaction in which there may or may not be any harmful effects depending on the drug and dose taken. For example:- diarrhoea, skin rashes, allergies, etc

3.) Lethal ADR

This is the final ADR in which severe health risk is involved and can even result in the patient’s death.

So, identifying the ADR is very necessary to avoid any further health complications regarding the drugs and doses.
