Periods have long been a taboo in the country. Imagine period pain or pregnancy means more missed days and more lost wages. One such alarming human rights and public health crisis exists in Maharashtra where thousands of women sugarcane cutters have undergone unnecessary hysterectomies . Imagine the choice:Miss work and lose income your family depends on or remove a healthy organ so you can keep working without interruption. At time when attempts are being made across the world to increase women’s participation in the workforce by implementing gender-sensitive policies.Whereas here, uterus has become the cost of employment. What disturbed you the most about this issue? What changes can we help make to improve the situation? MBH/PS ---

I, too, had read about this. It is very disturbing to know that a healthy organ should be removed to get a job. ---

we think equality can be brought in genders but in reality we all know our bodies are made different, which can affect our a women’s day to day life works. the women in Maharashtra took decision to earn, to tackle the inflation in basic needs- to survive. It must be not an easy decision. i respect these women ---

What disturbed me the most is that women’s health and reproductive rights were treated as obstacles to employment rather than something deserving protection and respect. No woman should feel pressured to undergo such a major medical procedure for job security. Stronger workplace regulations, regular inspections, strict legal action, and better awareness about women’s health rights are necessary to prevent situations like this. ---

It is profoundly disturbing that in the 21st century, biological normalities like menstruation are treated as economic liabilities to the point of forced, irreversible surgery.
