Why We Ignore Sleep Until It Affects Our Health

In today’s fast-moving lifestyle, many people think that sleep is just an option and ignore their sleep due to their busy schedules, work, studies, staying up late at night, and phone scrolling, as they don’t understand that sleep is very important to our body for our better health. Sleep is a repair and resting phase for both the mind and body. Most people ignore it until our body starts showing health-related issues.

Lack of sleep is a common factor for most of the health problems, which affects people of older as well as younger ones also. When we are asleep, our body gets relaxed, and our body’s mechanisms work slowly and smoothly. Sleep is very important for the better functioning of the body. Some people sacrifice their sleep just for work deadlines, late-night scrolling, late-night parties, or binge-watching, without realizing how much it affects their health

Lack of sleep will weaken your memory and focus, and reduce your ability to concentrate. It can also be the reason for low immunity, and may be responsible for frequent fever and cold. It increases anxiety and stress hormones in the young people. People are now getting irritated easily and getting frustrated over small things. It may happen because their body are not getting proper rest due to a lack of sleep.

Lack of sleep can be the reason for obesity, skin dullness, and dark circles. Without proper sleep, the body feels tired and lacks energy. I noticed whenever I sleep less than 6 hours, I feel irritated and unfocused the next day.

But if we maintain and give priority to our sleep, we can avoid many health issues. Some useful tips that can be helpful to maintain your sleep cycle, such as:

  • You have to fix your bedtime even on weekends, and your body clock stays stable.
  • Keep your screen off at least 30-60 min before bed
  • Avoid caffeine in the evening or at night
  • Go for a short walk after dinner
  • Keep your dinner on time and have a light dinner
  • Set the target to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep

Sleep is a free medicine, and like a long-term investment, it keeps your mind and body fresh, happy, and energetic. Having a good sleep helps to you focus on your work.

Yes indeed! 7-8hrs of sleep in todays busy world is undervalued.

The human body follows a Circadian rythm, which regulates various physiologic functions over the given 24 hours- from endocrine and exocrine to body temperature and brain alertness. The sleeping hormone Melatonin peaks at around 10pm.Deliberately staying up long hours interrupts with the normal homeostasis and can negatively affect overall health and well being.

Completely agreed.During school years for project completions I used to be awake till 2/3 am in the night however during college years I observed a loss in capacity to stay awake for longer hours. I immediately started prioritising sleep over everything else.
