**Paracetamol** is one of the most commonly used medicines.

We take it for fever, headache, and body pain without even thinking twice.

But many people assume that if the fever goes down, the illness is gone too.

Paracetamol does not kill bacteria or viruses like Antibiotics.

It works by acting on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates body temperature.

During an infection, **chemicals called prostaglandins raise the body’s temperature** as a mechanism to kill antigens causing the infection.

Paracetamol **reduces fever by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis** , thereby cooling off the body by few degrees.

The fever reduces, but the cause of the infection still remains.

That’s why paracetamol is called a symptomatic treatment, not a curative one.

This is also why fever can return once the effect of the drug wears off.

> Have you ever thought that reducing fever means the infection is cured?

Nicely explained in simple terms. The distinction between symptomatic relief and curative treatment is something patients often misunderstand.

I used to think so, but fever is a symptom,by reduction it gives relief.actually the root cause still remains.

Paracetamol acts on the COX-3 receptor, which has mild antipyretic action, unlike other anti-inflammatory drugs that act on COX-2, which inhibits inflammation. This is the major reason for its use as symptomatic relief.

Very informative! It’s helpful to understand that paracetamol reduces fever and relieves symptoms, but it doesn’t treat the underlying infection. Knowing the difference helps us use it safely and appropriately.

Yes, many mistake symptom relief for cure; paracetamol lowers fever, not the underlying infection or cause.

Great insight! This article reflects how paracetamol reduces fever and relieves infection, without affecting the root cause.

Nice information. Yes Paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) reduces fever by adjusting your brain’s internal thermostat, but it doesn’t eliminate the germs behind the infection. It relieves symptoms like hot flashes and pain while allowing your body to fight the infection naturally.
