Why India is becoming the diabetes capital of world??

Day by day India is becoming the country with the most diabetes affected people officially declared as "Diabetes capital of world ".What is causing this?

Once indians used to consume everything organic and food only from the own country with high quality. But nowadays marketed food trend ,street foods and resturant have become so common that people literally ignore the homemade and healthy foods. On the other side due to technology many works like to reach somewhere or house chores, office works have become easy to handle with less hardwork and people are also ignoring the significance of daily workouts!due to all this the cases of Diabetes is high.

Here are the causes:

  • Rapid lifestyle changes have increased unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity.
  • High consumption of sugar, refined carbs, oily foods, and processed snacks contributes heavily.
  • Long working hours, stress, and lack of sleep silently affect blood sugar levels.
  • Many Indians are genetically more prone to diabetes compared to other populations.
  • Urbanization reduced daily physical movement while increasing sedentary lifestyles.
  • Diabetes is now affecting younger people, not just the elderly.
  • Lack of regular health checkups leads to late diagnosis and complications.
  • Many people ignore early symptoms like fatigue, excessive thirst, and frequent urination.

We must be aware and spread awareness how diabetes is killing and affecting our daily life through education and advertisements!

Are we normalizing diabetes so much that prevention is no longer a priority? According to you, what is the top reason for this ?

Diabetes is essentially a lifestyle disorder. Even minor changes in our everyday habits can keep this disease at bay.

Yes, to some extent diabetes has become so common that many people no longer see it as a serious condition that needs prevention. Busy lifestyles, stress, lack of physical activity, poor sleep, and unhealthy eating habits are some of the major reasons why diabetes is increasing even among young people nowadays.

Diabetes is normalized in India despite being a chronic condition. Even pediatric diabetes cases are alarmingly rising in India. Factors such as consuming highly processed foods, foods and drinks with high sugar content from young age , sedentary lifestyle, stress may be the top reasons for increasing diabetes cases.

I agree. On the other hand, to counter the modern unhealthy lifestyle, our ancient lifestyle is slowly coming back. Cooking in clay pots, drinking water from clay pots, and not eating after 7 PM are becoming popular again. Doing yoga, pranayama, and meditation in the morning is also being promoted. Many influencers, doctors, and healthcare professionals are promoting these practices.

There are many diabetes reversal programs currently running that are bringing really very good results for those who want to reverse their diabetes. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that can be managed with strong willpower and by strictly following the rules of a healthy lifestyle.

India has already crossed stage of prevention, now all we can do is educate people on how to maintain appropriate levels of blood sugars in known diabetics with much focus on how to reduce daily sugar spikes , measures such as

.firstly by orderly consumption of plate which includes starting eating with salads (steamed veggies/ raw ones) followed by protein, fat and carbohydrates

. Secondly by following simple measures like walking 10 _15 minutes post meal to maintain sugar spikes

. With proper sleep and daily physical activity also one can achieve desired goal

. timely checking of blood sugar levels

.cut down on alcohol, smoking.

. Also trying to maintain desired BMI to curb obesity

Can be taken.

I conclude my opinion, as a prediabetic I could reverse my diabetes following such simple measures , anyone can do and we should adapt accordingly to our circumstances..

.

I have seen people have normalised being diabetic and hardly try changing their lifestyle.

Yes..everyone even though knowing it’s consequences yet didn’t want to change their lifestyle and also they just normalise it like part of our body..

Diabetes is becoming more common because of physical inactivity, consumption of trans fats, and stress. People can reduce the occurrence of diabetes by taking simple steps they can increase there physical activity after consumption of food, reduce the intake of sugary foods. I think corporate pupil are more likely to increase the risk of diabetes because of there inactive lifestyle, corporate offices can build a small gym to reduce the risk of diabetes for there employees.

Nowadays, everyone is equally prone to developing diabetes due to lifestyle changes and diet. I believe every firm should make sure that their employees undergo regular blood tests and checkups, keeping an eye not only on their work but also on their health.

Because of the food adulteration .

True, diabetes has been normalised and it needs to be addressed at priority

Diabetes is deeply rooted in our culture, lifestyle exchange of happiness something sweet is always considered as a symbol of goodness or happiness and lack of awareness which has led this path of making india a diabetic nation.

Yes, I totally agree. In India, diabetes is becoming very common not only among older people but also in younger age groups. Poor lifestyle habits like eating junk foods, lack of physical activity, lack of sleep, and high stress are major contributing factors. Many people treat it as a common lifestyle problem and ignore prevention until complications start. Prevention should still be a priority through healthy diet, regular exercise, weight control, and routine screening, in all age groups.

yes lack of physical activity and exposure to bad eating habits is the main cause of diabetes.

but there have been cases of diabetes in people that have led a life with least exposure to adulterants and other toxic environments such as pollution etc mainly living in rural areas. i dont get why those people have diabetes even after having good physical activities.

i have seen it in old age may be age is the factor.

while studying for my masters thesis , I came across the fact that Indians have a phenotype susceptible to developing Insulin Resistance as well as Genetic factors are also in the picture.

Multiple studies show that Indians have more body fat for the same BMI, especially central and visceral fat.

Central fat refers to abdominal and subcutaneous fat whereas visceral means the fat surrounding the internal organs. excess visceral fat is responsible for metabolic risks.

many studies are there showing interregional susceptibility to diabetes , like comparing north Indians and south Indians.

Seeing diabetes through this lens also can give a greater understanding of this metabolic disorder.

A very important topic that needs more awareness, and I think prevention through healthy routines and regular health checkups should be given much more importance.

For that Majorly Govt is responsible .Firstly not proper regulation of packaged food, company use various tacticts to overcome and use various forms of sugar used .If you could not control in grassroot level then you could not control it .For that FSSAI needs to wake up and need to learn from western countries .

The shift in traditional diets toward ultra-processed foods combined with reduced daily physical activity has created a perfect storm for metabolic disease in India. What’s concerning is the lowering age of onset—we are seeing Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in increasingly younger demographics. Prioritizing regular screening, protein-to-carbohydrate ratio balance, and resistance training needs to become a nationwide preventive strategy.

Yes. The prevalence of diabetes in India is increasing owing to urbanization, poor diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, and aging population. India has one of the highest populations suffering from diabetes in the world; hence prevention and early detection are vital.

Yes, In our country Diabetes and Anaemia is so common in such an extent that people stopped to take it seriously.

The top reason may be the medicalization of chronic disease.

· Changing food systems, reducing ultra-processed foods, and redesigning cities for active movement require massive political and economic effort.

· Society finds it easier to sell a prescription after a diagnosis than to fix the environment that caused the illness.
