![This image shows , how the receptors react to the mint.](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex033/uploads/medbound/original/2X/2/2e29e268bd9638f586a4618760e81cb373c89778.jpeg)

Did you ever notice how menthol toothpaste or candy or mint makes your mouth feel cold?

Generally everything that feels cold actually have power temperature (Icecreams, Cool drinks, etc.), but that’s not the case with mint.

**Why does this happens?**
The answer actually lies in the TRPM8 receptor, present in the sensory neurons. This specific receptor responds to cold temperatures. And this receptor is activated by the menthol as well.

After the activation of these receptors by the menthol, the brain receive signals similar to that produced during the cold exposure.

That is why the mint candy or Menthol products feels very refreshing. Interesting thing is, Menthol simply tricks your sensory system into perceiving coldness.

**What are the side-effects that’s associated with chronic use of menthol?**

It’s fascinating that menthol doesn’t actually lower the temperature but tricks our sensory system into perceiving coldness.

Informative post. I guess prickly heat powder has a similar mechanism to produce cooling effect.
