Chemotherapy is one of the most powerful tools we have against cancer. But while fighting cancer cells, it can sometimes temporarily weaken the body’s own defense system. Mortality and morbidity are frequently evident in chemotherapy.
Side effects of chemotherapy
Chemotherapy mainly targets rapidly dividing cells. Unfortunately, some healthy cells divide rapidly too, including cells in the bone marrow that help produce our immune cells.
B Cells (B Lymphocytes)
They produce antibodies that help recognize and fight harmful microorganisms and also contribute to immune memory.
T Cells (T Lymphocytes)
Helper T cells (CD4⁺) coordinate immune responses, while cytotoxic T cells (CD8⁺) help destroy infected or abnormal cells.
When chemotherapy suppresses bone-marrow activity, the number and function of these important immune cells can decrease.
This may lead to:
Increased risk of infections
Febrile neutropenia — fever associated with very low neutrophil levels
Slower recovery from infections
Serious complications, including sepsis, in severe cases

Regular blood-count monitoring
Preventive medicines when appropriate
Growth-factor support for selected patients
Early recognition and treatment of infections
Close communication between patients and their healthcare team
