# What is pharmacogenomics, and why is it important in medicine?

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person’s genetic makeup affects their response to drugs. It combines pharmacology (the study of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes) to develop personalised medicine.

- Helps determine the right drug and right dose for each individual.

- Reduces the risk of adverse drug reactions.

- Improves treatment efficacy.

- Supports the development of precision medicine in fields like oncology, cardiology, and psychiatry.

Example: Patients with certain CYP2C9 or VKORC1 gene variants may require adjusted doses of warfarin to prevent bleeding or clotting complications.
