During my graduation years, in one of the lectures of Drug discovery and clinical research, our professor asked us a question, 'What if you were given liberty to conduct research on any topic of your choice, you have the infrastructure ,you have the funds, you have the team, which topic would you choose?’
Within moments, everyone began sharing their ideas. One person expressed interest in researching Parkinson’s Disease, another focused on Diabetes, while someone else was interested in studying Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Almost everyone had some or the other disease in their mind already.
Our professor silently listened and raised a question that left the class speechless . She asked ’ 'Why did none of you mention menopause, endometriosis, lupus, or Chagas disease?’
She then explained that several important gaps in healthcare research still receive limited attention. Even among aspiring researchers, certain conditions that are underfunded, understudied or widely misunderstood often remain overlooked despite affecting millions of people worldwide.
This is something to think about
What if some of the most important medical discoveries are being missed, only because a few people studying them? What are your thoughts?
