I wasn’t actually aware that dentistry can hurt the dentists to badly. I have spent years learning and treating to relieve my patient’s pain - meanwhile my neck and shoulder muscles were silently screaming at me. It actually started with a minor dull ache during clinical postings, which was completely ignored by me, just like many medicos ignore their own symptoms.

When it started?

It slowly started during my long clinical postings. Long hours of treating patients with neck being titled in awkward angles, raising shoulders and worked at an elevated posture, which was repeated again and again, day after day. The full and which was bearable and ignored at first didn’t remain like that for so many days. It just became worse one day where I couldn’t even resist my hand and work, because of severe neck and shoulder spasm.

What actually happened ?

Repeated long hours of work with wrong postures without proper rest and exercise leg to repeated microtraumas, which accumulated over time.

Musculoskeletal disorders are actually one of the most common occupational hazards in dentistry. Studies show that nearly 60-80% of dental professionals experience neck and shoulder pain at some point in their career.

Things to consider:

We, as doctors, will take good care of patients health. Similarly we need to focus and give importance to our health also. Proper diet, rest and exercise are very important along with proper ergonomics.

The biggest question is why aren’t dental and medical schools monitoring students posture during clinical postings ??

Definitive question. Healthcare professionals work in a packed environment, where there is no time for holding exact position and posture. People should be given routine interval or break between their appointments to atleast straighten their back or relax before they dive into next session.

Self-care and therapy matters among healthcare professionals, too. Healthcare services should be made available to doctors from their training days itself. Prevention is better than a cure. We can’t pour from an empty cup. We also need to fill our own cup by being good to ourselves, and also seek treatment. Learning to treat ourselves with self-compassion is as important for us as it is for the patients.

Well said. We often talk about patient safety, but healthcare worker safety deserves equal attention. Poor posture and repetitive strain can have long-term consequences, especially when these habits begin during training. Perhaps greater emphasis on ergonomics and self-care in medical and dental education could help prevent many of these issues before they become chronic problems.

The same thing as an optometrist we also face workplace illness such as hip pain, eye strain as we are continously checking the eye power. Institutions should form a guidelines for employers safety.

Dental practice with good posture should be taught from the college days. After completion of degree half damage is already done. Due to habit of bending posture it becomes difficult to adapt to posture changes overtime.

A good topic brought to attention. Medical students should be taught to take care of themselves during first year of graduation. Where they can get detailed instructions about nosocomial infections, importance of posture and vaccines mandatory for them.

I have struggled alot with my neck and shoulder pain due to posture issue while performing treatment.

</div>

I’ve struggled with this question for years before I could reach to a conclusion.

The training culture in healthcare (dental included) is built on the assumption that the professional is always the one giving care, never receiving it.

Therefore, it took a crisis point for me to realise that _ **resisting help wasn’t strength, it was just a very well-trained reflex.** _

The same empathy we’re taught to extend to patients doesn’t naturally turn inward. That takes deliberate, uncomfortable practice.

Self-care is very important. Long sitting or long standing hours affect posture and our breathing gets affected too. Postural muscle imbalances can cause chronic pain. Cervical pain and back pain are common nowadays. Healers need healing too, so it is important to take care of your own body and mind.

Yes, that’s so true, “a doctor takes good care of his/her patient, but who cares for the doctor”! Actually, medical and dental colleges should also give importance to their own health and should maintain proper working-resting shifts.

This is such an important topic. We often learn how to care for patients, but not enough about protecting our own health. Good ergonomics should be emphasized from the very beginning of clinical training.

Very relatable and an important reminder. We spend so much time caring for our patients that we often neglect our own health. Ergonomics, regular breaks, and posture training should be an essential part of dental education from the very beginning. 👏🦷

Nowadays, many people working in corporate jobs experience these problems in their daily lives. They often occur because of prolonged sitting at a desk, poor posture, and a lack of regular movement. Many people don’t even know why these issues develop or what they can do to improve their flexibility.

I recommend starting your day with stretching or light exercise. If you work at a desk for long hours, make it a habit to take regular breaks. Try to stand up and move your body for at least 5 minutes after every 30–45 minutes of sitting. Practicing simple exercises at home can also help improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and support overall physical health.

Finally!! Someone said it out loud.

We often talk about how medical colleges train us to care for patients, but very rarely do we talk about the physical toll this profession takes on healthcare workers themselves.

Not just students, even experienced physicians and clinicians who follow proper techniques and maintain ideal positions during procedures struggle with aches, pains, and long-term musculoskeletal issues.

Hours of standing, bending, and performing demanding procedures day after day can silently wear the body down. Unfortunately, many healthcare professionals simply learn to live with the discomfort and keep going.

This is a reality that many of us in healthcare can relate to, yet it’s rarely spoken about. It’s about time we acknowledged it and started giving the well-being of healthcare workers the attention it deserves.

While treating the patients we forget about ourself. In fact we are trained in such a way by saying this is how a doctors life looks ----------- stay on duty for 36 hours straight, no proper intake of food, water, sleep, neglecting physical and mental health and so on…

So its important to care about self, have a proper meal, sleep, mental health. Trying to take help when necessary.

Some Healthcare professionals is doing everything to protect and treat their patient by putting their own health aside, they just want to build a better connection with patient want to give their best to treat and provide care to them they usually don’t know that it slowly hurts them inside sometimes it costs their health too neck pain, joint pain eye strain these are some of the problems that they face at their early times.

They take care of other people but also they should take care of themselves too their health is also important to keep others healthy

As an MBBS student and a future physician, I can understand the need to rest and focus on ourselves while looking out for patients’ health. Our field requires us to stand for long hours during surgeries. Even though as a student, I don’t have much exposure to the clinical world, I can only think of how exhausting it must be to work without resting. We need to spread awareness about the importance of physicians’ health, because burnout is quite normalized in our field.
