Many times we stop eating eggs because there is a bird flu alert going on. Besides the virus-associated bird flu cases, other microbes can also find fertile ground to grow in the chickens of a poultry farm. The globalization of industrial poultry farming has been found to be associated with rising cases of bacterial diarrhea.

A recent study published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) demonstrated the accelerating campylobacter zoonosis around the world. The investigators analyzed genomes of chickens and wild birds from 27 countries during the time period from 1979 to 2026. They demonstrated that the expansion of poultry farming across the world created a fertile ground for the transmission and growth of Campylobacter jejuni, which were previously found in isolated wild bird populations. The different wild bird species demonstrated a genetically distinct population of C. jejuni, which is highly infectious to chickens.

The globalization of poultry farming has caused easy transmission of bacterial strains from wild birds to chickens. The commercial chicken farming houses abundant chickens, which further escalates the transmission of Campylobacter between hosts. The transmission of Campylobacter has increased around 100-fold, which has allowed the bacteria to evolve and develop antimicrobial resistance. With a vast and connected host population on a global scale enhanced the spillover chances and, in turn, causes the acclimatization and adaptation of the bacteria to new host species.

The environmental change due to anthropogenic activities can cause the local microbial population to go global, and so the pathogen emergence and spread of infectious diseases. Every year there is a rise in cases of bacterial-associated diarrhea, with Campylobacter being the most common culprit. Understanding the role of the global poultry trade network in the emergence and spread of zoonotic pathogens is an important issue to be considered for the safety and welfare of humans.

**Do you think it is better to go for local poultry farmers than global brands in the supermarkets?**

Informative post mam. According to me supporting local farmers is important, but only when they maintain high standards of hygiene and animal health. Global brands may have standardized quality control, but many local producers also offer excellent products when they follow best practices.

Great post. Supporting local farmers is definitely awesome, but honesty wise, both local farms and industrial brands can run into contamination if hygiene standards aren’t super strict. For everyday consumers, proper cooking and safe food handling in the kitchen are our best line of defense.

This was a great reminder that productivity isn’t just about working harder. As a biotechnology student, I sometimes sacrifice sleep before exams, but I’ve learned that good rest helps me remember and understand concepts much better.

Very informative post. I think the focus should be on proper hygiene, regular quality checks, and safe poultry farming practices rather than whether the poultry is from a local farm or a large brand. Safe handling and thorough cooking of eggs and poultry are equally important in reducing the risk of foodborne infections.

Informative and a thought-provoking post. I would prefer a trust-worthy local farmer because thought industrial products go through various hygiene standards, I don’t think what we see on those packages is genuinely true.

Proper cooking is very important; it plays a major role in killing pathogens.
