Now imagine sleeping for 20 hours a day, not because you are tired, but because your brain just will not allow you to stay awake.

This is the truth about Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), also known as "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.

Those who have KLS have repeated periods of excessive sleep, which can last for days or even weeks. At these times, they may wake up to eat or to go to the bathroom, but then go back to sleep. Many are confused, irritable, unable to concentrate and feel detached from reality when awake.

It is most often seen in adolescent males, but can also be seen in females and adults. In between episodes, people typically feel fine and have no symptoms.

The cause is still not known. Scientists believe that a problem with the hypothalamus, the section of the brain that controls sleep, appetite and body temperature, may be involved. Other causes have been proposed, such as viral infections, head trauma, and autoimmune processes.

KLS is rare and symptoms are similar to psychiatric and sleep disorders, making diagnosis difficult. No cure exists and treatment is aimed at symptom control and support of the patient during episodes.

Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder that reminds us how fragile our brains are in controlling our daily lives. Even getting up and around can be difficult when the brain’s normal rhythms are disrupted.

Have you ever heard of Kleine-Levin Syndrome before?

Yes. Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is a rare neurological disorder marked by recurring episodes of excessive sleep (often 16–20 hours a day), along with confusion, changes in behavior, and sometimes increased appetite. Between episodes, most people return to normal with no symptoms. The exact cause is unknown, and there is no specific cure, but supportive care and, in some cases, medications may help reduce episodes.
