An Electrocardiogram (ECG) records the heart’s electrical activity. Each wave and interval represents a specific event in the cardiac cycle.

**P Wave** - Atrial depolarization (_atria contract_)

**PR Interval** - Electrical impulse travels from the _atria to the ventricles_ through the AV node

**QRS Complex** - Ventricular depolarization (_ventricles contract_ and pump blood)

**ST Segment** - Early phase of ventricular recovery. Abnormalities may indicate _myocardial ischemia or infarction_

**T Wave** - Ventricular repolarization (_ventricles_ _relax_ and prepare for the next heartbeat)

Understanding these ECG components is a fundamental step for every healthcare professional and pharmacy student. ECG interpretation becomes more meaningful when combined with clinical history, symptoms, and physical examination.

This is a great and easy-to-understand breakdown of ECG basics. Understanding what each wave and interval represents makes ECG interpretation much less intimidating, especially for pharmacy and healthcare students. A strong foundation in these basics is definitely the first step toward understanding abnormal ECG patterns.
