> What should one do if they experience severe tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity can be due to various reasons. It can be due to the removal of the protective layer on the tooth that we call enamel, with age , due to calcium deficiencies, dietary practices or other factors . So in that case, one can use **desensitizing toothpastes** , apply them on the tooth for a few minutes and rinse, or use the same for brushing. Other reasons can be due to **cervical abrasions** that happen due to vigorous, improper brushing, so get a **filling done** from your dentist. Sometimes it can also occur due to **cavities in your tooth** that can lead to sensitivity, so getting it **checked and getting a filling** is best. Or it can also occur if there is **recession of gums** from the tooth, which exposes the root structure; even that can cause sensitivity.

In rare cases, tooth sensitivity can also occur due to a phenomenon known as **galvanic shock**. This may happen when a patient has metallic restorations (such as amalgam fillings) in opposing teeth of the upper and lower arches.

When two dissimilar or **opposing metallic restorations** come into contact through saliva, the oral fluids act as an electrolyte, allowing a small electrical current to be generated between the metals acting as anode and cathode. This can lead to a sudden, sharp, or tingling sensation, often perceived as sensitivity or pain.

Although this is uncommon, it is something to consider in patients who report unexplained sharp discomfort associated with metallic restorations. In such cases, evaluation by a dentist is recommended to assess occlusion and restorative materials and to provide appropriate management if needed.

Recently, what is happening is most people who have the habit of **grinding their teeth( bruxism)** during nighttime out of stress and anxiety, are also having **attrition of teeth** , flattening out of the teeth surfaces on the occlusal/incisal level and developing sensitivity. For such patients, **corrective treatments** like using **occlusal splints, night guards,** help with the habit and reduce sensitivity. Also, correcting the **overstrain and firing of musculature** in the head and neck region through **TENS therapy** also helps relax and bring the teeth into **myocentric occlusion** , helping with sensitivity. But in **worst-case scenarios, going for root canal treatment is the final option** if these conservative approaches don’t work.

Nice information. Irregular brushing is the main causative for this. Secondary reason is using of local toothpaste that are marketed .

There could be many reasons of tooth sensitivity so a dentist advice would be a better option.
