Spirulina – The Superfood

Superfood is a term trending for the food items that have high nutritional value. Such foods are rich of many vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. In this category of Superfoods, an alga that is ‘Spirulina’ has made its special place. Spirulina is the blue-green algae which is found in oceans and salty lakes and is considered as a nutrient-dense food.

Importance of Spirulina:

  • Rich source of protein, as some sources even claim it is approx. 60-70% protein by weight.

  • Rich source of many micronutrients such as Vitamin B, K, iron, magnesium, calcium, etc.

  • Rich in antioxidant components such as beta-carotene and phycocyanin.

  • Nutrient-dense food as it has immense nutrients present in it, with fewer calories.

Health benefits of Spirulina:

  • It is good for heart health due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

  • It helps in improving blood cholesterol and triglycerides.

  • It is helpful in maintaining good oral health.

  • It helps in relieving some seasonal allergies.

  • It may help in weight-loss journey.

  • Spirulina may worsen the symptoms of autoimmune conditions as it stimulates the immune system of the user.

  • It can interfere with regular course of some medicines such as drugs for diabetes, blood thinners, etc. and therefore it should be taken carefully only after consulting with the doctor.

  • Some Spirulina products are being contaminated with harmful compounds such as heavy metals or some sort of harmful toxins which can lead to serious health issues.

  • Some people can show allergic response to Spirulina as their body metabolism would be unable to accept it in a healthier manner.

Just like benefits, even the considerations are numerous regarding Spirulina consumption.

No matter how much benefits a Superfood carries within it, care must be taken while consuming it or a prior consultation with doctor can help choose the best superfood for yourself.
